Volunteer for the 2nd Annual Day of Service Sept. 20

After a successful inaugural start to the ISBA Annual Day of Service in 2013, the ISBA Service Committee has set even higher goals for the 2nd Annual Day of Service, which is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20.

Last year, more than 60 judges and attorneys, and their families, showed up for eight different projects organized in six counties across the state. This year, the Service Committee hopes to double that number.

“The inaugural Day of Service was a grassroots effort by the State Bar’s Service Committee to get Hoosier lawyers and judges to step outside of their day-to-day work and lend a hand to their local communities, further demonstrating the good work we do as a legal community,” said Jaime Oss, Michigan City, chair of the Service Committee. “What we soon found out was that many took this as an opportunity to bring their families along to also serve. It is my hope to expand upon this and ensure there are family-friendly options at each site.”

One of those volunteers was Magistrate Judge Tim Baker of the Southern District of Indiana, who, along with other attorneys, brought his family to volunteer at the Wheeler Mission in Indianapolis.

Also in Indianapolis, local attorneys turned out to harvest fresh produce at Indy Urban Acres, an eight-acre organic farm that provides 100 percent of its produce to local food pantries. Others partnered with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc., to plant and mulch trees on the Monon Trail.

This year, attorneys in Fort Wayne are partnering with students at Indiana Tech Law School for a project.

“Given that the law school is new in Fort Wayne, we asked if students might be interested in partnering up with the Allen County Bar Association to organize this year’s event. The response was an overwhelming yes,” said Lindsay Hurni, District 4 Liaison for Allen County.

Hurni said they were looking forward to getting more attorneys and judges in Fort Wayne to participate this year and that the enthusiasm of local law students would surely make this year’s Annual Day of Service a bigger success than last year’s.

“At the end of the day, it was fun for members of the Service Committee to go online and see photos on Facebook of what attorneys and judges in other counties were doing,” Hurni said of last year’s inaugural event. “I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone does this year. We’ve been hard at work trying to get everyone involved.”

In other parts of the state, attorneys in northwest Indiana will be working with different organizations, including local food pantries. Committee member Jennifer Irons, Cedar Lake, Ind., will be working with the local Project Love Food Pantry as it undergoes an expansion in order to serve a larger population in Lake County. Other projects are also set to take place in LaPorte, Marion, Newton, St. Joseph and Steuben counties.

The Service Committee currently has 11 district liaisons that are working to coordinate efforts in all counties for the Annual Day of Service.
